“Happy Backyard” Activities for Kids

Happy BackyardsSchool will be out before we know it, so we thought it might be helpful to start stockpiling a few “happy backyard” activities (and their supplies) for use when we hear the soon-to-be-uttered but very dreaded phrase “I’m bored!” Typically we hear that phrase about a week after summer vacation begins, but with these fun activities below maybe you can make it to mid-June before you hear it again!

Water Balloon Basketball – The best part about this game is that if it gets out of control quickly, it’s even more fun! Fill up as many water balloons as you can find, grab as many kids as you can find and then take turns trying to shoot water balloons towards the basketball goal. Soon kids will most likely begin taking aim at each other and that’s OK, too!

Homemade Chalk Paint – You’ll only need cornstarch, food coloring, water, paint brushes and a muffin tin to create your own sidewalk chalk paint. Just add equal parts of cornstarch and water into each muffin tin, along with a drop or two of food coloring to get to your desired color. Kids will love painting the driveway but if they happen to start painting each other, you’ll find that a quick spray of the hose will get them back to their original state.

Backyard Obstacle Course – If you’ve got a swingset in your backyard, use it as part of an obstacle course in your backyard that kids must race through to attempt to beat the times of others or their own personal best times. For added fun, have them do the obstacle course with variations like: carrying an egg on a spoon, wearing a blindfold or being tied at the ankle to another person. Get creative and this will be an activity the kids can do all summer long!

Kiddie Pool Bubbles – No matter how old your kids are, you can amaze them with these huge bubbles! You’ll need a hard plastic kids pool, 5 galloons of water, 10 cups of Dawn dish soap and a hula hoop. Gently mix the water and dish soap together in the pool and let the solution sit overnight. Kids can then take turns standing in the pool using the hula hoop to create giant bubbles that can be as tall as they are! Of course you can also find other suitable objects around the house that can make fun smaller bubbles as well.

Mother’s Day Craft: Burlap Door Hangers

We’ve got a fun craft for you today that you can do with your kids for Mother’s Day gifts, teacher appreciation gifts, or for your very own home! These burlap door hangers are inexpensive, can be as easy or complicated as you’d like to make them, and will certainly be appreciated by anyone receiving them as gifts!

Here’s what you’ll need:

– Burlap fabric

– Marker

– Scissors

– Clear Acrylic Gesso or Modge Podge (sold at craft stores) or a mixture of equal parts water and glue

– Foam brushes

– Acrylic paint

– Raffia or ribbon for embellishment

– Wire

– Hot glue gun and hot glue sticks

– Plastic grocery bags

1) To begin, decide on a shape or letter for your door hanger. Fold your burlap in half and draw or trace your shape with a marker or pen and then cut out the shape, making sure you end up with two identical pieces of burlap.

2) Using the gesso, Modge Podge or glue mixture and foam brushes, paint the two burlap pieces. (Kids love this step!) Be sure to put them on top of a piece of cardboard or foil when painting as the glue will seep through the holes. Burlap pieces should become stiff when dry.

3) Paint one of the burlap shapes with acrylic paint when the glue is dry. You can be as simple or as detailed as you’d like in this step and you can give your kids as much freedom as you’d like. Just remember that the imperfections on this craft make it more charming!

4) Once your painted burlap is dry, hot glue around the edges of the two pieces of burlap, pressing them together as you go. Be sure to leave a 6-inch opening for the next step.

5) Cut plastic grocery bags into strips and stuff them into your burlap piece; keep adding pieces until it takes on a 3D appearance. Hot glue the opening and seal shut.

6) Cut a 10-inch piece of wire and stick it through the top of your door hanger, twisting it closed to create a circular shape for hanging. Tie raffia or ribbon to one side of the hanger for added decoration.

6 Outdoor Games for Spring Break Entertaining

Spring is finally here and your kids may be looking for after-school activities or spring break entertainment to keep the boredom at bay. Here are some fun outdoor games that can be played with little equipment and a range of players:

Kick the Can – Put a can (or any other kick-able object) in the middle of the playing space and choose one player to be “it.” The “it” player guards the can while counting to 20 as the other players hide. When he reaches 20, he begins looking for the other players and tries to tag them. If he successfully tags them, they go to “jail” – a predetermined space. Untagged players can try to run and kick the can which then sets free any players in “jail.” The game ends when the “it” person puts everyone in “jail.”

Crab Soccer – Set up goals at two ends of a playing field (or backyard). Two teams of players – even as small as two players on each team – get into crab positions with their backs facing the ground and “walking” using their feet and hands. Players try to get the ball into the other team’s goal by using their hands or feet.

Flashlight Tag – Pull out the flashlights for a late-night version of a beloved kid’s game! Choose an “it” player or multiple players and give them flashlights. Other players get a head start to hide and players are considered “out” when the flashlight “tags” them.

Blind Man Obstacle Course – Set up a simple obstacle course in your backyard – it can involve basketballs, swing sets, or whatever other equipment you have around. Give kids the opportunity to take a closer look at the obstacle course or even go through the obstacle course one time before blindfolding them and having them do the course without seeing.

Olympic Competition – Set up any number of games using your basketball hoop, trampoline or backyard swing set and assign a point value for first, second and third place to each activity. Have each kid do each of the activities, naming a gold, silver and bronze winner for each event. The winner of the games is whoever collects the most points at the end of all the activities.

Three-Legged Red Light Green Light – Combine two favorite kids’ activities! Tie two kids’ ankles together with bandanas and then put them on a starting line with other pairs. A person at the finish line calls out green light and players must run to the finish line. When he or she yells red light, the pairs must stop. To add to the fun, have any pairs who fall over return to the starting line.

What are your spring break plans?
